Back to the Future

Change #2:  “The Sojourner Chapter  will meet on the  first Wed in April, 5 April, at Pullman Restaurant on Cherokee St  Leavenworth. NOT AT THE CAFÉ. Originally the meeting night was changed to 12 April because of the Armed Forces Scottish Rite Reunion. But I just checked the AFSR home page and see the Reunion is not until 18 April.  Also April 12 is in the middle of Holy Week and a lot folks have church commitments.” – Bro. Dick Wright.

Therefore, the meeting is back to the original Wednesday.  Please  let Bro. Dick know if you are planning to attend.

A Shift in the Space-Time Continuum

This shift could … unravel the very fabric of the space-time continuum and destroy the entire universe!

A Note from the Chapter Secretary.  March and April Sojourner chapter meetings will by off their normal Wednesdays.  In March we will met on 8 March at Pullman Restaurant because 1 March is Ash Wednesday.   In April we will meet on 12 April at Pullman Restaurant because Scottish Rite Reunion is scheduled on 5 April.  If these dates change I will let everyone know.

Remember 13 April is Maundy Thursday and 14 April is Good Friday. Palm Sunday being on 16 April.  Thanks, Bro. Dick

March Meeting Change of Date!

Note: March 1, 2017 is Ash Wednesday.  In order to ensure our membership does not have to make a choice between Ash Wednesday observances and Sojourners, Fort Leavenworth Chapter #154 will be moving meeting night to Wednesday, March 8, 2017. All other arrangements remain the same.

Fabulous February – Furry Feast

It’s a short month and the first Wednesday arrived quickly (Feb 1st!), the day before Groundhog Day.  Rather than wait for the rodent to predict gloom and doom for the next six weeks, Brother WhistlePhigg took the initiative to yank the woodchuck from his burrow and make him part of the evening’s repast.  BBQ marmot went well with the fricasseed spotted owl and the clubbed seal bacon.  As always, a great meal.

Business of the hour included Flag Building reports, Americanism Essay offering at Patton Jr High, the indecorous dressing down of our officers by the National Commander at our October encampment, and Color Guard for Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge, all of which was quickly adjudicated and properly disposed.  Prayers were offered for Brothers McAfee, Patterson, and Cook, and their ladies.  Concerns were raised for absent Brothers Henke, Merrick, LaPreze, Weilemann, and Larson.

Oh, and since there was no ‘dirt weasel’ to make prognostications, there was no shadow.  Therefore, spring will arrive six weeks early.  You’re welcome.

Next Sojourners meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at the Cafe, Abernathy Building, 1102 N 2nd St., Leavenworth, KS. Gather at 6:00 pm, Dinner at 6:30 pm, Meeting at 7:00 pm. Brothers, you are encouraged to bring your lady. Meetings are usually over well before 8 pm.   Dinner is $10 per person. Please let Brother Dick know you are coming so we have a meal ready for you. But, please, if you say you are coming, come. You are obligated to pay for the meal whether you show or not. Bring $US cash. The Cafe does not accept devil’s dollars (i.e. Euros).

Run Out on a Rail

Our ship has come in!  Unfortunately, we were at the railroad depot.  In a pre-snow, cold, January evening, the gang gathered at Pullman’s in Leavenworth for the first meeting of 2017.  Keeping with the railroad motif, a train whistle was plainly heard when the idea of initiating a new member was proffered.

Bros. Barry, Robert, Vic, and Dick immediately after Bro. Robert’s initiation.

President Bro. Barry engineered a fine initiation ceremony for Bro. Robert LePreze who is now a Sojourner in good standing.  After making the grade, he’s seen in the picture (left) shown holding his new Sojourner’s medal.

We remember our good friend Brother Joe Madenjian was seen on a video taken this past Thanksgiving.

Next Sojourners meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at the Cafe, Abernathy Building, 1102 N 2nd St., Leavenworth, KS. Euros).  Stay tuned, because we may change venues due to a change in commitment by the Cafe.

Rekroot Found in Pumpkin Patch

20161005_heroes_encampmentIn fine military fashion, the members of Old Frontier Camp, Heroes of ’76® mustered for an autumn encampment at Fort Boughton on October 5th.  Things were going per plan when all of a sudden, a skirmish occurred on the picket line.  Pandemonium ensued.  Fortunately, the firelocks simply offered only a flash in the pan because the arriving force was actually our National Commander, Brother Carl Diamond, and his staff.  Just about the time that falderal was quelled, another interloper was snagged near the guard house.  After a thorough interrogation, the scalawag turned out to be Brother Devin Larson who was looking for the latrine.  In order to share that secret, he was initiated, sworn to secrecy, and then shown the way.  Too late.  He got cold feet.

Post Labor Day and Back to Work

20160907_AaronSeptember may be back-to-school month, but we Sojourners have been laboring through the summer, although we do what we love and love what we do.  At this month’s meeting, we initiated Brother Aaron Ewing in due form.  He is seen here receiving his Sojourner’s medal from Bro. Dick Wright.  Welcome Bro. Aaron.

We also congratulate Bro. Richard Schroeder who was appointed 3rd Vice President to fill the vacancy since Bro. Larry Cook is on sabbatical.  Prayers were offered for the Bro. Ivan Ridgeway family for the quick recovery of his wife after a traffic accident.

Seal-Heroes-WNOTE: In lieu of the October meeting, Heroes will meet per OPORD No. 2016-01.  All Heroes of ’76 should have received orders for activation and muster at Camp Boughton on the evening of 05OCT16 1800 Hours.  No Sojourner’s meeting in October.

Thespian Thrills Throng at August Meeting

20160803-FL154-Ryan_Pangracs-800wRyan Pangracs, a senior this fall at Leavenworth High School, presented his findings from his July trip to Philadelphia. Ryan was selected as our sponsored student to the Spirit of America Youth Leadership conference at Freedom’s Foundation at Valley Forge.   Ryan is a well known Thespian and was featured in the Public Record section in the Friday, July 15, 2016 edition of the Leavenworth Times.  In addition to being selected to be our sponsored student, he was recently selected to be an International Thespian Officer.  He is only one of two such Kansas students ever to be selected for that honor.  Ryan (third from right) provided a post-deployment briefing and answered the blizzard of questions.  He stated that the trip was well worth our investment.

20160803_Weilemann-800Brother Mike received his official certificate of membership into Sojourners at our August gathering.  He is seen here in an official reenactment of the event that took place only moments before. (The cameraman was a little slow.) Bro. Barry, President (pro tem) presented the certificate.  Bro. Dick served as the official witness.

Sunflower-Patriot-3Q16-Cover-stylizedThis is the first meeting after the inaugural chapter newsletter, The Sunflower Patriot, was published.  Our editor, Bro. Rick, presented the feedback he received as a result of the publications distribution.  If you are a member of Fort Leavenworth Chapter #154 and did not receive an email copy, contact Bro. Rick at TheSunflowerPatriot at this web address.

Next meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 7, 2016 at the Cafe, Abernathy Building, 1102 N 2nd St., Leavenworth, KS. Gather at 6:00 pm, Dinner at 6:30 pm, Meeting at 7:00 pm. July? Or telling the Truth?

“Explosive”, is how Brother Dick described our July meeting.  “One-Arm” Arnold Denten was our special guest who ‘single-handedly’ (pardon the pun) gave a demonstration of pressure-loading an 80mm home-made pan mortar from re-constituted dud fireworks.  While placing bets whether it would work, the gathered mass was thrilled to see that our guest presenter got a flash-in-the-pan and and he was Denten the ceiling.

Next meeting will be held on Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at the Cafe, Abernathy Building, 1102 N 2nd St., Leavenworth, KS. Gather at 6:00 pm, Dinner at 6:30 pm, Meeting at 7:00 pm. Brothers, you are encouraged to bring your lady. Meetings are usually over well before 8 pm.

For our next meeting, we have tentatively scheduled to hear from our student attendee who makes his trip to the Spirit of America Youth Leadership Conference at Freedoms Foundation Valley Forge in mid July.  We haven’t sent a student to Valley Forge in quite a while so his feedback should be interesting to new and seasoned Sojourner alike.  Please make plans to join us.

June Bugs and Beau Evils

“Capacity crowd!”, yelled the caterer as he looked at the number placard near the door.  Fortunately, the maximum allowable was equal to the maximum attending.  Wow!  What a great time among Sojourners that gathered at the usual watering hole for the June 1, 2016 meeting.

A quick inspection revealed no June Bugs, but Brother Beauregard W. Evils, a.k.a. “Beau Evil”, resident entomologist, gave a very graphic demonstration on field checking oneself for ticks and other carriers of pestilence and mayhem.  We learned more about blow flies than we ever wanted to know.

Next meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 6, 2016 at the Cafe, Abernathy Building, 1102 N 2nd St., Leavenworth, KS.

Euros).

At our next meeting, “One-Arm” Arnold Denten will show how to reconstitute dud fireworks left over from the local 4th July celebration.

See you after Independence Day.  Let’s enjoy it while we are still citizens and not subjects.  Fly the American Flag.
